2016 GOVERNOR’S AWARDS FOR THE ARTS AND HUMANITIES RECIPIENTS ANNOUNCED

Once a year, a select few Alaska citizens and organizations that exemplify great art and devotion to the humanities are recognized for enriching the culture of the state.

 

The Alaska State Council on the Arts and the Alaska Humanities Forum are pleased to announce the eight recipients of the 2016 Governor’s Awards for the Arts and Humanities.

The annual awards are co-presented by the Alaska State Council on the Arts and the Alaska Humanities Forum in coordination with the Office of the Governor. The awards ceremony will take place Thursday, January 28, 2016 at the Juneau Arts and Culture Center.

The 2016 awardees are:

Governor’s Awards for the Arts

 

  • Lifetime Achievement Award:June Rogers, Fairbanks
  • Individual Artist Award: Pat Garley, Palmer
  • Arts Advocacy Award: Nancy DeCherney, Juneau
  • Margaret Nick Cooke Award for Alaska Native Arts and Languages:

Vicki Soboleff, Juneau

 

Governor’s Awards for the Humanities

 

Distinguished Service to the Humanities:

  • Cyrano’s Theatre Company, Anchorage
  • Steve Henrikson, Alaska State Museum Curator of Collections, Juneau
  • Lucy “Ahvaiyak” Richards, Iñupiaq Language Instructor, Barrow

 

Alaska Studies Educator of the Year:

  • Marc Swanson, Kenai Mountains-Turnagain Arm National Heritage Area Curriculum Developer, Seward

The Alaska Humanities Forum engages Alaskans in humanities-based projects and innovative programs such as Take Wing Alaska, Sister School Exchange and Leadership Anchorage. The Forum was founded in 1972 by the National Endowment for the Humanities, and is one of 56 state and territorial groups supported by the NEH. The Forum is also a member of the Federation of State Humanities Councils. The mission of the Alaska Humanities Forum is to use the humanities to tell stories and impact the lives of all Alaskans.
